Opportunity at a Glance
Under the general supervision of the Communications Operating Center Supervisor or, in their absence, a designee, the Communication Operator will receive calls from the campus community relating to both non-emergency and emergency assistance. The Security Communication Operator will then be responsible for dispatching campus security and/or local emergency responders based on the type of assistance that is required by the requestor. The Communications Operator will assist the Communications Operating Center Supervisor or, in their absence, a designee, with monitoring and reviewing camera footage and will coordinate and document the on-duty team locations during shifts with the ultimate goal to improve time of responses.  While the core responsibility will be as outlined, this colleague will also be required to perform the job duties of a Security Officer.  

Responsibilities

  • Receives and processes emergency and non-emergency calls from members of the AUC Community both on and off campus
  • Determines nature and location of emergency, prioritize; dispatch emergency units, if applicable, and in accordance with established procedures
  • Ensure optimized use of Communications Operating Center technology and systems
  • Ensure system failures are escalated both internally and externally
  • Coordinate and review surveillance footage and submit surveillance reports accurately and on-time as outlined in established protocol and/or process/procedures documents
  • Maintain Communications Operating Center registers and logs and follow protocol and procedures to ensure positive results on inspections
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population
  • Operate a personal computer and enter data into computer database
  • Perform duties of Campus Patrol Supervisor in event the Supervisor is sick or on vacation
  • Ensure list of emergency numbers is updated and accessible at all times
  • Take part in emergency drills
  • Escalate important information with immediate effect
  • Obtain or have excellent knowledge of the geography of the surrounding neighborhoods (Cupecoy, Maho, Point Pirouette and Beacon Hill)
  • Obtain or have excellent knowledge of the locations of various businesses and institutions in St. Maarten

Other Tasks

  • Ensure all requests (e-mail, verbal) are responded to timely and that any on-duty team(s) check emails and respond to enquiries
  • Assist and maintain all protocols and process/procedure documents are current and documented as appropriate
  • Ensure problems affecting Communications Operating Center equipment and systems are escalated and resolved. Take the necessary follow up action
  • Check the Communications Operating Center inventory daily to ensure all equipment such as phones, radios, computers, flashlights etc. is accounted for and operational
  • Provide safe and reliable transportation for campus community members, including Courtesy Shuttle Service and Non- Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), ensuring strict adherence to university safety policies and schedules
  • Assist the Campus Response Team during emergencies, natural disasters, hurricanes or other catastrophic events
  • Ensure department members know where to find information in terms of community details, emergency contact numbers and protocols
  • Periodically, conduct on and off campus patrols to stay familiar with geography
  • Ensure good customer friendly service is exhibited to AUC internal and external customer
  • This position is a designated Campus Security Authority
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary education required. Candidates with post-secondary (university-level) education in security, justice studies, management, supervision, or related fields preferred
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including after-hours, weekends and public holidays.
  • Skilled in report writing
  • Must be willing and able to attend and successfully complete all required training and continuing education.
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to have a general knowledge and enforce, if applicable, laws, rules and regulations; read, understand and interpret standard official legal documents; exercise judgment and discretion in analyzing and resolving problems; read, correct and prepare clear and concise reports; give, follow and understand written and oral instructions
  • Experience/knowledge of site security and patrol techniques; crime prevention and safety training techniques; dispatch radio codes and procedures; automated records management systems; CAD and other Security Systems; and emergency preparedness and response plans highly desired

AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • The Security Communication Operator will be expected to work with minimal supervision.  The Security Communication Operator will report directly to the Communications Operating Center Supervisor, or in their absence a designee, who will be responsible for providing daily guidance.  Personnel assigned to the department are considered essential personnel during and following emergencies.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • The Security Communication Operator should expect to work in uncomfortable indoor and outdoor locations, exposed to extreme weather including extreme heat and wet/humid conditions when required.   The Security Communication Operator can be exposed to loud noises and vibration.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Lifting: Raising or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) 25-50lbs
  • Carrying: Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder
  • A Dutch or French driver's license is required
