Job Description

Adtalem Global Education (“ATGE”) is seeking an accomplished, visionary dean to lead the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (“AUC”). As the US and countries worldwide continue to grapple with healthcare delivery and the size and composition of the physician workforce, this is a rare opportunity for an academic leader to strengthen and grow an international medical school that significantly contributes to the nation’s physician workforce.

Reporting to the President of Adtalem Medical and Veterinary and an independent Board of Trustees, the Dean will be responsible for the overall leadership and management of the AUC School of Medicine, including all aspects of medical science and clinical education. The Dean will have authority commensurate with these responsibilities. The Dean will articulate a strategic vision for growth, academic excellence, and career outcomes; recruit and retain key talent, including strong faculty; ensure student outcomes goals are continually achieved; and engage with the international medical education community and key stakeholders to raise AUC’s visibility and strengthen its reputation.

The Dean works in a matrixed organization within ATGE in close collaboration with the enrollment and operational teams. The Dean is responsible for AUC’s budget performance and ensures that AUC has the resources and support needed for centralized services to meet student outcome goals and achieve expected growth. The Dean will be expected to travel to represent the University to the Government of Sint Maarten, the UCLan leadership in the UK, the international medical education community, US federal and state regulatory bodies, and Adtalem Global Education (based in Chicago).

The Dean leads a team comprising direct reports, including the Senior Associate Dean for the Sint Maarten Campus, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, and dotted line relationships with leaders in academic operations, campus operations, student services operations, and human resources. The Dean also leverages shared support for functions like legal, IT and financial aid centralized in ATGE. The Dean is part of the Adtalem Medical and Veterinary President’s first team.

Priorities

The Dean has many opportunities to take AUC to the next level. The success of AUC will be primarily determined by the Dean’s ability to continue progress in addressing key student outcomes, student persistence, and work effectively in a matrixed organization, and positively engage with many different stakeholders.

As AUC Dean, this is your opportunity to support a transformative medical school experience for a purposefully diverse group of students who will positively impact health and medicine throughout their training and careers. As part of the ATGE family of institutions, there are opportunities to leverage resources and support beyond what most medical schools can do independently. As one of two medical schools within ATGE, there is an opportunity to strengthen collaborations with RUSM. Similarly, the sister institutions within ATGE offer a chance to increase inter-professional educational opportunities and interdisciplinary care delivery.

AUC has strong student outcomes, has a state-of-the-art educational building, enhanced technology infrastructure, strong relationships with Sint Maarten, established partnerships with clinical sites, and a medical science campus in the UK.

The Dean will be guided by AUC’s strategic objectives, which are as follows:

  • Consistently achieve student outcomes in a changing student population.
  • Evolve the multi-campus model to support the new curriculum and run effectively within Adtalem Medical and ATGE.
  • Cultivate and enhance AUC's relationships with government entities and the local community through proactive engagement and collaboration efforts.
  • Enhance and expand US-based clinical partnerships through refinement and strategic development initiatives.
  • Create a positive and inclusive campus environment.

As the leader of a premier international medical school and part of the Adtalem family, the Dean will be expected to focus on the following priorities:

  • Inspire confidence, build trust, and strengthen relationships and partnerships;
  • Able to function as the academic leader at AUC and as a key collaborating member of the Adtalem Medical and Veterinary and ATGE leadership teams;
  • Deliver strong student outcomes and persistence;
  • Build and empower teams that can successfully manage the day-to-day while moving forward on a strategic agenda;
  • Navigate the complexity of international medical education, ensuring that accreditations, approvals, and access to Title IV funding remain intact;
  • Work effectively with the independent AUC Board of Trustees;
  • Engage effectively with critical stakeholders, including students, faculty and staff, alums, clinical site partners, governments, accreditors, and the medical education community;
  • Assess, develop, recruit, manage, and retain exceptional talent for the academic program;
  • Facilitate the integration of academic and corporate styles for seamless collaboration and synergy
  • Use data, negotiation skills, and influence to ensure AUC has the resources needed to succeed;
  • Collaborate with shared service leaders to ensure efficient and practical support for AUC;
  • Manage a budget and
  • Navigate ambiguity and lead effectively during a crisis.

Qualifications

AUC School of Medicine seeks an accomplished, experienced leader with outstanding interpersonal, listening, communication, and collaboration skills. Strong candidates will have demonstrated integrity, courage, and an appreciation for inclusivity; they will also demonstrate the ability to interact well with university administration, faculty, students, alums, external stakeholders, and the Board of Trustees.
