Job Description

The senior instructional technologist works collaboratively with product development professionals, university faculty, and subject-matter experts in creating premier online, post-secondary degree programs and courses for working adults. The senior instructional technologist is the leading subject matter expert in creating online courses and competencies from content provided by learning experience designers and serves as a thought leader in recommending technology options both inside and outside the LMS to support the effective delivery of this content, as well as the objectives of the learning experience design. The senior instructional technologist continuously improves the practices and processes used in building and maintaining online classrooms and content. This position resides in the Product Development and Classroom Design (PDCD) group and works with several teams across PDCD and partner institutions to ensure that the finished product delivered to faculty and students meets quality, brand, and experience expectations. The senior instructional technologist mentors and coaches’ instructional technologists, sharing expertise and guiding the creation of high-quality instructional technology solutions across digital curriculum projects and initiatives.
 

  • Continuous technical knowledge and strategic use of product development technologies, including authoring tools, production software, learning content management systems, learning management systems, digital asset management systems, IT systems integrations, and third-party technical integrations (e.g., eBook publishers, online homework systems, simulation platforms, etc.)
  • Provides senior level leadership of the course build/creation for multiple delivery contexts, including course-based, competency-based, self-paced, micro-learning, and other such contexts to align with partner institution strategies; possesses proven expertise in three or more delivery context areas.
  • Creates and implements standard templates to maintain professional quality in all products; uses LMS and programming expertise to implement approved deviations from or additions to the standard template.
  • Collaborates with IT professionals to implement integrated solutions (e.g., LTI and API connections), serving as a PDCD subject matter expert representative in such areas.
  • Triages the most complex continuous product improvement requests and implements solutions according to established practices.
  • Critically analyzes non-routine continuous product improvement requests and implements solutions to technical issues independently.
  • Recommends solutions to faculty and PDCD colleagues where content changes are involved – and then implements those solutions independently.
  • Evaluates course and competency build practices to ensure effective and efficient processes for course builds, recommending improvements to processes and practices as appropriate.
  • Autonomously builds the learner experience to ensure effective integration of text, graphics, animations, videos, and interactions for these offerings.
  • Conducts or coordinates functional QA of all courses builds to ensures final deliverables meet or exceed established accuracy, consistency, and quality standards. Reviews and evaluates work of internal and Reviews external course builders, course maintenance specialists, vendors, and independent contractors against functional quality standards.
  • Collaborates with PDCD and academic stakeholders for final course build approvals, as well as approvals of major course maintenance activities, iterating as needed based on feedback from faculty (and students, if appropriate)
  • Actively participates on and leads project teams in assisting with planning, scheduling, and problem-solving expertise.
  • Serves as a mentor and coach to instructional technologists, sharing expertise and guiding the work of instructional technologists to ensure adherence to quality standards and expectations.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time.

 


Qualifications

  • BA or BS required in instructional technology, instructional design, graphic design, information technology, computer science or related areas, master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) to seven (7) years relevant technology experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of instructional and learning management systems, content management systems, and educational technology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and history of positive results achieved collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent at follow-up and attention to detail
  • Strong writing and facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of common learning management systems, especially Canvas and Brightspace.
  • Advanced computer application skills.
  • Proven expertise in web design and development tools (i.e., HTML).
  • Strong analytic skills, excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are required.
  • Ability to work on multiple, small- and large-scale projects simultaneously and manage priorities.  
  • Experience in support of online courses is required. 
  • Ability to work independently in an agile, fast-paced matrix organization.
  • Ability to learn and implement new technologies and adapt processes for continuous improvement.

Additional Information

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected salary range for this position is between $59923.09 and $108334.92. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
