Opportunity at a Glance
The Postdoctoral Fellowship is a learning role focused on preparing selected candidates to teach, effectively and proficiently use online technology and resources to support student learning and complete additional fellowship commitments in a higher education setting. There may also be an opportunity to mentor dissertation students. This is accomplished in an environment that is built around a community of care and is respectful of students, the Fellow, Walden University, and the discipline in which the Fellow is involved. Fellows are expected to adhere to all Walden University Faculty expectations, which are clearly set forth to the Fellow at the start of their employment with the University. Fellowship positions are temporary and will last for a period of no more than one year. Acceptance into the Walden University Postdoctoral Fellowship does not guarantee continued employment beyond the Fellowship program. Fellows are compensated for courses taught. Selection committees will consider a range of factors related to increasing diversity at Walden University, including but not limited to historically under-represented populations and racial/ethnic groups, those with disabilities, socioeconomic backgrounds, research, and teaching goals that emphasize diversity, as well as first-generation college graduates.
Responsibilities
- Training: All new Fellows receive specific ongoing training from Walden University in teaching practices, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures, and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work (including use of www.turnitin.com), and mentoring.
- Course Shadowing & Teaching: Fellows shadow a mentor for their first term and will be assigned a course each term they are in the Fellowship, which is taught using the Canvas platform. Fellows are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. Per the Faculty Handbook, responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Fellows are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas. Additionally, substantive feedback on assignment rubrics must be provided within 5 days of submission and grades posted through Canvas. It is estimated that a minimum of 8-10 hours per week is needed to teach one course; it is also likely that more time will be required in the fellow's first course
- Availability: Walden expects Fellows and faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.
- Fellowship Commitments: Fellows participate virtually in a Kick-off, regular coaching sessions, professional development and service opportunities, shadowing, teaching, and supervisor and mentoring meetings. They will also collaborate with a coach and supervisor to develop and reflect on an annual plan with specific goals for each term.
- Residencies: Faculty Members may be required to attend Residencies held domestically or virtually where they will teach intensives and colloquia and facilitate school and university-wide discussions. Part-time faculty/Fellows may but are not required to attend. Supervisor approval is required to participate.
- Additional responsibilities as determined by program leadership and encapsulated in the Fellow’s annual plan.

- Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment.
- Commitment to fostering Walden’s Community of Care philosophies.
- Fellows must maintain their licenses and any appropriate certifications to continue to teach at Walden University.
- Fellows are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Fellow may publish and acknowledge Walden University.
