Opportunity at a Glance

This faculty position is a role within the Office of External Affairs, with  responsibilities of supporting  external partnership opportunities and of teaching and supervision of students

The Office of External Affairs oversees, and drives change in the areas of Community Engagement, Community Academic Affairs, and the Community Medicine and Global Health track. The emphasis is on developing responsible partnerships with communities where RUSM students live, study, and serve while training students to address health inequities in a diverse environment.

The position reports to the Associate Dean of External Affairs and collaborates with other faculty members and adjunct faculty engaged in activities related to, Community engagement, External partnerships, collaborations and outreach in Barbados and the region, Community Medicine and Global Health track and Research.

The faculty member has the responsibility to fulfill the mission of programs within the office of external affairs and contributes to program and curriculum development as well as engage in fieldwork and course instruction, inter-professional collaboration, program management and evaluation as well as engage in external collaborations and outreach.

External Collaborations

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of programs in partnership with external organizations locally and regionally. These include but are not limited to Institutes of higher learning and health institutions, Governmental organizations, public health agencies, and other related organizations.
  • Contribute to collaborations with entities that interface between RUSM and external partners.
  • Contribute to the Community Engagement activities.
  •  Assist in development and implementation of local and regional community engagement to establish strong networks, fostering an inclusive environment between the community and RUSM students, and colleagues.
  • Support building of strategic relationships with local and regional partners.
  • Support development of community initiatives and programs aligned with local healthcare needs and communicate such events to the internal and external Community. E.g., Recognition of Heath awareness days/months
  • Monitoring and evaluation of Community projects

Teaching

  • Engage in teaching advising and supervision of students and supporting activities in the Community Medicine and Global Program to fulfill the objectives of the program across the spectrum of education, clinical experiences, and research activities.
  • Contribute to community and global health program planning and reviewing performance against targets.
  •  Collaborate with community partners in the supervision and development of community experiences.
  • Prepare course material and deliver effective interactive lectures, workshops, and small group sessions.
  • Provide summative and formative assessments of student performance in various activities.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations.
  • Prepare and review examination questions to assess students’ knowledge and proficiency.
  • Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in curriculum planning, development, and delivery.
  • Develop new instructional materials and teaching techniques with participation in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum planning.
  • Actively participate in relevant professional activities to improve teaching and subject matter competence.
  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected and confer with advisory groups to modify course content.
  • Contribute to delivering the work of the department in a cooperative and collegial fashion.

Research

  • Support opportunities for RUSM students and faculty to engage in community-based research.
  • Collaborate and assist in supervision of student research within the Community Medicine and Global Health program.
  • Preparation of reports and proposals on Community academic projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • MD / DO / MBBS degree and/or and advanced degree in public health, global health, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of current affairs related to public and global health or specialized areas e.g., Disaster Medicine, Obesity Medicine, Mental Health
  • Scholarly achievements in relevant fields would be an asset
  • Experience working with diverse clinical partners in community settings
  • For MD/DO/MBBS applicants, Residency training in a specialty is desirable
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a relevant setting
  • Experience teaching in an academic environment
  • Experience in supervision and mentorship of medical students
  • Experience in Research, in particular community based research
  • The ability to work in a diverse community of student’s faculty and patients.
  • Knowledge in the field clinical medicine
  • Knowledge in the field of public health education and practice and research
  • Ability to succeed in a collaborative work setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to network with governmental and non-governmental organizations, to develop new partnerships.
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and is a creative and innovative thinker.
