Faculty members educate Walden University students by effectively and proficiently using online technology and resources so that knowledge, information, feedback, and critique are imparted to and shared with students in timely, thoughtful, carefully formulated, and well written communications. Faculty Members are expected to adhere to all Walden University Faculty expectations, which are clearly set forth to the Faculty Member at the start of his/her employment with the University.
Walden University is currently accepting applications for dynamic, innovative faculty with experience in the field of public health for full-time faculty role in the CEPH accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) programs in the School of Health Sciences and Public Policy. This core faculty position will also have practicum and applied practice coordinator responsibilities within the MPH and DrPH programs.
Training
All new Faculty Members receive specific training from Walden University in the techniques teaching, use of an electronic learning platform, specifics of the policies, procedures and degree programs of the School or College in which they are going to teach, socialization into the Walden University culture, assessment of academic integrity of student work, and research supervision of theses and dissertations.
Course Teaching
Faculty Members are assigned a course, which is taught using the Canvas platform, and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, they must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University. Per the faculty handbook, responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the accuracy of student postings and submissions and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas.
Availability
Walden expects faculty to be reasonably accessible to students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside the course discussion board and in addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings. Faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, and/or other appropriate documents. The university suggests regular and predictable availability, such as online office hours or regular online chats.
Residencies
Core Faculty (Full Time) may be required to attend Residencies held domestically or internationally, where they will teach intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions.
Doctoral Committee work
Mentoring is a major responsibility of faculty members who work with students completing the research requirements of their doctoral degrees. Faculty mentor involvement with students is a significant factor in student retention and students’ success in their programs. Students’ progress toward completion of degree requirements is regularly monitored by the university, as is the effectiveness of faculty mentors in supporting the progress by their mentees.
Committee chairs are expected to:
- Accept specific mentoring assignments and maintain a minimum workload as determined by the school.
- Initiate and maintain frequent and regular interaction with students.
- Respond to student submissions with constructive written feedback in a timely fashion.
- Help students produce high-quality work through analyzing and synthesizing appropriate subject matter and/or by applying appropriate research methods and data analyses.
- Evaluate students’ work related to their progress in achieving academic milestones and demonstrating standards of quality.
- Assist students in maintaining satisfactory academic progress toward timely completion of their degree programs.
- Advise students on the development of quarter plans.
Committee members are expected to:
- Work closely with the committee chair to help students advance in a timely manner.
- Respond to student submissions with constructive written feedback in a timely fashion.
- Help students produce high-quality work through analyzing and synthesizing appropriate subject matter and/or by applying appropriate research methods and data analyses.
Travel Requirements
Some travel could be required (minimally once per quarter)
Management/Supervisory Responsibilities
Faculty Members may be required to chair and/or participate on thesis/dissertation committees. Some Faculty Members are also involved in supervising applied practice and skill development courses. Faculty Members may be asked to serve on faculty governance or academic policy committees, and, in general, participate in other ways to strengthen the academic reputation of Walden University.
- Earned doctorate in public health or closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of teaching experience at the degree level of the program is preferred.
- Experience in the practice of public health.
- Record of scholarly activity (research or service) in public health.
- Experience with distance learning/teaching preferred.
- Experience with Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation.
- Evidence of compatibility with the Walden mission of positive social change, broad access, professional excellence, and our values of quality, integrity, and student-centeredness.
- Ability to work with students who are experienced, mid-career professionals.
- Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment.
- Experience assisting students with placement in practicum and applied practice settings.
- Teaching, advising, and mentoring; commitment to the promotion of applied research and the recruitment and development of a diverse faculty; excellent leadership, communication, team, and human relations skills.
- Faculty Members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree in the discipline being taught. Faculty Members are also expected to maintain currency with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations. If participating in research, the Faculty Member may publish and acknowledge Walden University.

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected salary range for this position is between $68,637.22 and $124,230.14. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
