Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance


Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Effective teachers are sought, particularly individuals who are interested in improving medical education and who work well on a team. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

The successful candidate will provide strong teaching in Human Physiology, including providing insights into, and understanding of the physiological basis of common diseases in humans, and the current diagnostic approaches used in medical practice. Teaching medical knowledge and clinical skills focuses on active learning methods and small group activities. The successful applicant should have excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to working closely with medical students to help them acquire the required medical knowledge and to develop clinical competency.

Essential duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Knowledge of the applied human physiology that underlines the basis of disease.
  • Preparation of course materials relevant to physiology and pathophysiology of disease and integration of student and peer feedback to enhance the learning experience.
  • Delivery of interactive lectures, small group sessions, and case-based presentations in-person at the AUC Sint Maarten campus.
  • Supervision of educational activities of students under actual or simulated situations.
  • Preparation, administration, and grading of formative and summative assessments to prepare students for licensing examinations and clinical rotations.
  • Hold regular office hours for student consultations on concepts.
  • Participation in curriculum planning, development, and delivery.
  • Actively engage in professional development activity to stay abreast of changes in their field.
  • Serving on AUC committees as appointed or elected and actively participate in university activities.
  • Serves as a positive professional role model for students, assisting in their professional/social development.
  • Take on academic activity considered to facilitate student success by the department Chair or Dean of campus.
  • Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel
  • Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence
  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected, and confer with advisory groups in order to modify course content
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • PhD, MD, or MBBS Required or
  • 3-5 years of relevant teaching experience in a medical school Required
  • Strong teaching skills and experience or evidence of potential Required
  • Interest in medical education
  • Desire for self-improvement
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
  • Preference will be given to an applicant with proven teaching skills within the areas covered by the department
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to reside in Sint Maarten
