Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) offers a unique program of training on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. Students benefit from seven semesters of integrated preclinical and clinical studies at our St Kitts campus, and one year of clinical training at our affiliate veterinary teaching hospitals in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Our ongoing research focuses on key issues strategically relevant to One Health in tropical and developing countries and includes zoonotic diseases, food safety and security, environmental health, and conservation medicine. Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance

The Department of Biomedical Sciences within the Division of Anatomy and Laboratory Services is looking for a Lead Veterinary Technician who will have experience in general laboratory management and, preferably, knowledge of animal anatomical sciences. The manager will report directly to the Director of Laboratory Services and the Division Head of Anatomy and provide direct supervision to technical staff to support teaching, research, and operations. The successful candidate will also be required to work with the other departments and student groups on campus to oversee any components or activities that are related to the Anatomy Lab.

The Lead Technician will be an integral member of the Anatomy Team, which comprises 5 faculty and 2 technicians. The manager should possess some level of supervision of others and the ability to train and mentor new and existing hires and promote a culture of team participation. The manager is expected to provide a clean, safe, and healthy teaching and learning environment in accord with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Adtalem/RUSVM Health and Safety Guidelines for faculty, staff, and students. The individual must also be self-motivated, possess the ability to solve problems, communicate effectively, and be respectful and meticulous to the needs of students, Anatomy Team, and others across campus in accord with our TEACH (Team, Energy, Accountability, Community, Heart) values.

This position is critical to the RUSVM strategic plan priorities.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will join a large team which consists of Certified/ Licensed/ Registered veterinary technicians/nurses, veterinary assistants, and faculty. The candidate will manage Certified/ Licensed/ Registered veterinary technicians/nurses, veterinary assistants, support staff and will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the area for which they have responsibility. The role typically includes clinical duties, teaching responsibilities, animal care, on call duties and administration but can vary depending on the main work area.

  • Duties will be assigned by the Division Head in consultation with the Head of Department.

  • Management of the team will include addressing training needs of the team, ensuring appropriate continuing education opportunities are identified and maintained, identifying career development opportunities, and managing annual performance reviews. It also includes organizing work and vacation scheduling, managing time clock, and keeping track of compensatory time.

  • There will be an expectation to ensure general maintenance and repair of the work area of responsibility. Another important responsibility will be working closely with Health and Safety team to ensure compliance with all regulations and ensure protocols follow IACUC recommendations.

  • There will be a significant contribution to ensuring the efficient administration of the annual budget setting process and the purchasing process.

  • It is expected that managerial duties will be undertaken alongside any clinical, teaching, animal care and on call duties.

  • There would be an expectation to maintain licensure and AAHA and AVMA accreditation requirements

  • Completes other duties as assigned

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Complies with all policies and standards


Qualifications

  • 5 years’ experience as a certified veterinary technician Required or Equivalent
  • 1+ years team leadership experience Preffered
  • Certified/ Licensed/ Registered veterinary technician/nurse Required
  • Laboratory experience and 3-5 years of management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in Anatomy strongly recommended.
  • Experience with the use of PC, Apple iPad, Microsoft Office, and other programs and database is required.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. or 23 kgs. and work with formaldehyde fixed specimens.
  • Proven ability to communicate professionally among colleagues and externally to vendors and others to support and promote RUSVM.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and communication skills are essential.
  • Capacity to work independently.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and public holidays.
