Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) offers a unique program of training on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. A cutting-edge curriculum, with innovative use of technologies and simulations, provides the best possible training for tomorrow’s veterinarians. Students benefit from seven semesters of integrated preclinical and clinical studies at our St Kitts campus, and one year of clinical training at our affiliate veterinary teaching hospitals in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Our ongoing research focuses on key issues strategically relevant to One Health in tropical and developing countries and includes zoonotic diseases, food safety and security, environmental health, and conservation medicine. Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance

The Department of Biomedical Sciences within the Division of Anatomy and Laboratory Services is looking for an Anatomy Lab Manager who will have experience in general laboratory management and, preferably, knowledge of animal anatomical sciences. The manager will report directly to the Director of Laboratory Services and the Division Head of Anatomy and provide direct supervision to technical staff to support teaching, research, and operations. The successful candidate will also be required to work with the other departments and student groups on campus to oversee any components or activities that are related to the Anatomy Lab.

The Anatomy Lab manager will be an integral member of the Anatomy Team, which comprises 5 faculty and 2 technicians. The manager should possess some level of supervision of others and the ability to train and mentor new and existing hires and promote a culture of team participation. The manager is expected to provide a clean, safe, and healthy teaching and learning environment in accord with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Adtalem/RUSVM Health and Safety Guidelines for faculty, staff, and students. The individual must also be self-motivated, possess the ability to solve problems, communicate effectively, and be respectful and meticulous to the needs of students, Anatomy Team, and others across campus in accord with our TEACH (Team, Energy, Accountability, Community, Heart) values.

This position is critical to the RUSVM strategic plan priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Managerial Duties

  • Collaborate with the Director for the Division of Laboratory Services to ensure key operational strategic targets are being met.
  • Performs administrative duties related to position that includes but not limited to creation of budgets and work schedules; inventory and order placement of supplies; create and review SOP; maintain quality control logs and records
  • Supervise, train and assist the anatomy technicians with day- to-day operations that support the teaching, research, and other on-campus activities.
  • Review timecards for the anatomy technicians which includes the biweekly approval of timecards required for payroll.
  • Ensure all personnel working in the lab including faculty, staff, and students adhere to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Provide timely updates to the Director and Division Head as it relates to projects, or any other business related to the overall functioning of the lab.
  • Work closely with other departments like Facilities, Security, and IT to maintain smooth operations.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director, Division and/or Department Heads.
  • Anatomy Technical Duties

  • Ensure the areas all areas are clean and organized daily.
  • Periodically check status of all cadavers, and student dissection tables and refresh/replace preservation fluids as necessary.
  • Outside of class, assist the team, and students with preparation of animal prosections and supervision of prosection making by lab staff members.
  • Check viability of laboratory specimens, choose identify need for new prosection and disposal of old ones.

    Academic Duties

  • Provide support to the teaching team with the invigilation of lab exams and reviews.
  • Post announcements on Canvas related to lab closures, club activities, coat washing, and any other communications approved by the course coordinators.
  • Setting academic staff meetings, drafting agenda, and placing on SharePoint including recording of minutes.
  • Assist with finalizing the Anatomy combined schedule for the upcoming semester once the master schedule becomes available.
  • Collaborate with the various student groups that utilize the Anatomy space to store their specimens and host wet labs.

    Professional Development and Leadership Training

  • Enroll in continuing education courses on an annual basis that are tailored towards personal and professional development.
  • Ensure team members are provided with opportunities to enroll in continuing education courses on an annual basis.
  • Provide and support opportunities for colleagues to cross-train across the different lab departments in the Division of Laboratory Services.
  •  

    Team Engagement and Enablement

    Ability to supervise, motivate staff and promote a collegial work environment in accord with our TEACH (Team, Energy, Accountability, Community, Heart) values.

  • Prior, during, and after class or exams, assist the team to set up, proctor, and store materials.
  • Assist faculty and other staff with handling live animals for instruction or euthanasia.
  • Schedule pickup of excised animal organs/tissue from local abattoir.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation of the incinerator in accord with manufacture’s protocol and notify Facilities Team for periodic inspection and maintenance.
  • Work with the Manager of the Pathology Lab as necessary to assist with autopsies, store and schedule incineration of animal waste following autopsy and pet cremations and provide technical assistance over the semester breaks where possible

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or related field.
  • Laboratory experience and 3-5 years of management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in Anatomy strongly recommended.
  • Experience with the use of PC, Apple iPad, Microsoft Office, and other programs and database is required.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. or 23 kgs. and work with formaldehyde fixed specimens.
  • Proven ability to communicate professionally among colleagues and externally to vendors and others to support and promote RUSVM.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational and communication skills are essential.
  • Capacity to work independently.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and public holidays.
