Job Description

Overview

 

The mission of Ross Preparatory School is to provide an enriched US curriculum for children of faculty, staff and students of RUSVM along with members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Community. The curriculum is taught by highly trained and qualified teachers who, in partnership with parents and the community, motivate students to achieve academic success, develop a lifelong love of learning and become a responsible global citizen. The Prep school is located on the RUSVM campus and follows a calendar that is very similar to the vet school.

Teachers are responsible for following and enriching the Prep School’s specific curriculum. In recognition of the high transient rate of students, it is essential that the adopted course-of-study be followed. In utilizing the set curriculum, teachers may strengthen their presentation with supplemental knowledge, creativity and varied instructional techniques and are held accountable for teaching to the specific stated standards in each area.

Under guidance of the principal or designee, the 5th-8th grade Math and Science teacher will have the primary responsibility for planning and teaching Math and Science in alignment with the Ross Preparatory curricular objectives. Additionally, the teacher will be responsible for evaluating and reporting for all students in his or her classes. The teacher should be able to work creatively in accommodating student needs, responding appropriately to the diversity and educational background of students and overcoming instructional challenges constructively.

  • Provide a challenging, student-focused environment based on the US Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards, which incorporates multi-modal learning within a collaborative school climate
  • Collaborates with other staff to co-plan, co-deliver, and individualize instruction for all students in a class
  • Works creatively to accommodate student needs, diversity and educational backgrounds of the students in the class; and overcome instructional challenges constructively and positively
  • Plans effective and varied assessment of student learning and keeps accurate records of student progress.
  • Monitors students’ understanding of the curriculum and adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments to meet developmental and academic needs of diverse learners.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use technology to enhance the classroom environment, communicate with children and adults, and in direct instruction and cooperative learning
  • Maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect and safety both in and out of the classroom.
  • Encourages critical thinking and problem solving through prompts, questioning and application.
  • Communicates learning goals, high standards, and expectations of quality to students.
  • Promotes confidence and perseverance in the student that stimulates increased personal student responsibility for achieving the goals of the curriculum.
  • Is a team player and shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of the Ross Prep School.
  • Contributes to the school community in at least one formal way beyond the classroom that does not include a stipend.
  • Takes responsibility for reading and responding in a timely manner to information distributed by the administration.
  • Is constructive and cooperative in interactions with administrator, teachers, parents, and students and is receptive to their contributions.
  • Upholds school policies and procedures and promote a safe and respectful learning environment
  • Works in various areas at the Prep school as guided by Principal

 


Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary, Middle or Secondary Education, Masters preferred

- A valid US teacher’s certificate with demonstrated skills OR minimum of 3 years of experience with a Bachelors and teaching at a a middle school level

-Strong content knowledge in mathematics and science and familiarity with relevant educational standards.

-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability

- An energetic personality with ability to engage young children in a creative manner

- The ability to integrate all areas of the curriculum, while teaching the Next Generation Science and Common Core math standards

- Experience modifying the curriculum to accommodate learners

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with children and adults
