The School of Public Policy and Administration seeks dynamic, engaged, and supportive doctoral faculty research mentors who have strong communication and learning-relationship skills for this part-time position in the Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration and Doctor of Public Administration programs. Key responsibilities of this position are to facilitate doctoral student learning during the dissertation and doctoral capstone phase of their program and to engage and support doctoral students as emerging scholar-practitioners.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ph.D. PPA Contributing faculty members’ primary responsibility will be to chair and/or serve as second members on doctoral dissertation committees as methodologists and/or content experts. Another responsibility contributing faculty members may have is assignments as University Research Reviewers (URRs) for doctoral dissertations. Infrequently and based on student enrollment, and when applicable, Contributing Faculty may be asked to participate in university and school-based residencies, and will be invited to instruct content courses or to instruct research methodology courses they are credentialed to teach.
Availability
Contributing faculty should be reasonably accessible to their students. Faculty members are expected to be available to students outside of the course discussion board. In addition to providing substantive feedback on assignments and postings, faculty members will publish their availability to students through course syllabi, instructor information in the classroom, or other appropriate documents.

Course Teaching
Faculty Members, including committee chairs, may be assigned a course, which is taught using the Canvas platform, and are responsible for interacting with students within this platform. Discussion Boards for classrooms are open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Although postings to the classroom may be done at any time of day, postings and responses must be completed in a timely manner in accordance with the Faculty Handbook or other criteria established by Walden University and the program to which they are assigned. As such, Contributing Faculty members are expected to be in classrooms a minimum of 4 days per week and post responses to student’s questions within 48 hours. Faculty Members are required to verify the quality of student postings and submissions, and to provide feedback and grades to students through Canvas.


Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• PhD or Doctorate in Public Policy and Administration or a closely related field from an accredited institution required
• Evidence of continuing scholarly or creative work within the past 5 years. Proficient in APA 7th edition
• Strong research methodology background in quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods in research
• Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students earning their degrees in a distance learning environment; supervising student research (at the graduate level); commitment to the promotion of applied research that contributes to Walden's mission of positive social change
• Excellent leadership, communication, team, and human relation skills
• Experience working in an online instructional setting at the graduate level
• Must have access and be comfortable in electronic communication environment (Blackboard preferred). Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft products (Microsoft Office 365 preferred).  Must have experience with Microsoft 365 TEAMS and/or Zoom for outside meetings with faculty and students

Tools/Technical Skills:
Contributing faculty provide their own laptops and are expected to use the Walden University Canvas platform and the Microsoft 365 tools with their assigned Walden email addresses in their Walden activities.  Walden University provides a Walden e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, university and college listservs, and other faculty communications tools. Other technology and software platforms may also be provided to the core faculty member, as determined by position responsibilities and programmatic needs.

Technology Requirements:
•The Faculty Member must be able to use Microsoft Office products (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint), zip software, and Adobe Acrobat and must have reliable Internet access as well as alternate access in cases where primary access becomes unavailable.
•Experience with Office 365 Exchange programs preferred. Canvas Platform for online classroom delivery preferred.

Initial Training:
All new Faculty Members receive specific training from Walden University with respect to best practices in online learning facilitation, doctoral mentoring, and effective supervision and review of dissertations. They also receive socialization into the Walden University culture of quality, integrity, and student-learning centeredness and an orientation in their specific degree program.

Residencies and Travel:
Doctoral level faculty can choose to participate in Residencies held domestically or internationally, where they may teach colloquia, lead writing-intensive workshops, and facilitate school-wide discussions.

BUSINESS COMPETENCIES

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary.


Additional Information

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected compensation rate for this position is as follows:

  • Graduate Course Instruction: $1,560 - $4,080 per Quarter or Semester, depending on type of course taught and length of course
  • Undergraduate Course Instruction: $700 - $2,200 per quarter, depending on type of course taught and length of course

    Actual pay may be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as type of course taught; experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility. Walden also offers other opportunities for its contributing faculty members, such as dissertation/doctoral study committee chair positions, research reviewing, and dissertation and doctoral study mentoring.
