Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance
RUSM uses a hybrid approach for the delivery of its Safety and Security function, combining in-house leadership with services provided by a third-party vendor. The  Team Lead, Safety and Security – Shift is responsible for assisting in the oversight and management of the Department of Safety and Security, and ensuring the Campus Community, including any on-campus or off-campus areas where an RUSM relationship exists, meets our standards of safety and security for students, faculty, staff and outside vendors and/or visitors.

This position is also responsible for supporting the Manager of the Safety and Security office and ensuring policy and management decisions are carried out in a professional and efficient manner. The position will be responsible for the general oversight of the work performed by the security team members, however, performance management, scheduling, staffing of the shift etc. will remain the responsibility of the vendor. Close coordination by the Team Lead and the vendor representative will be a critical function.

This position will also perform those duties of our campus patrol/security officer as needed during scheduled shifts.  

This position will play an important role in Emergency situations and will be required to be an active participant in events that involve the Campus Community in addition to having oversight to ensure the Campus Community is monitored on a 24/7 basis, including public holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the members of the RUSM community, property, and systems and follow all necessary practices and protocol for the Campus Community and surrounding areas.
  • Assist with the management of campus/patrol personnel by providing coaching and feedback and providing shift summaries of campus happenings.
  • Prepare daily incident reports.
  • Respond to on and off-campus incidents that occur involving members of the RUSM community environment, including input on hurricane preparedness or other safety protocols.
  • Conduct investigations to obtain information concerning accidents and other incidents at the RUSM and makes reports to supervisor for further investigation as necessary.
  • Serves as a member of the Damage Assessment and Recovery Team (DART) after severe weather or other catastrophic incidents.
  • Assist with preparations in the event of an approaching storm.
  • Monitor and, if necessary, enforce university security and safety polices on campus and among Department of Safety and Security team members.
  • Maintain active contact, both verbally and in writing, to encompass all aspects of the RUSM community including students, faculty, staff, spouses/dependents, contractors and visitors.
  • Remain up to date on emerging trends in the fields of public safety, university security, and crime prevention by participating in available training in addition to being well-versed in community/government practices, laws, and guidelines.
  • Provide on call coverage for security emergencies.
  • Review written reports and work products of team members to ensure their accuracy and completeness prior to submission to Assistant Managers/Managers/Security Director.
  • Supervise the issuance of university identification credentials and assignment of access privileges.
  • Supervise the access control of pedestrians and vehicles entering campus
  • Perform all other functions commensurate with the position which may be assigned from time to time.
  • Drive security vehicle to conduct routing patrols and respond to security incidents.
  • Accompany security officers on night patrols around the campus and the environs.
  • This position is a designated Campus Security Authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Candidates with post-secondary (University level) education in security, justice studies, management, supervision, or related fields are preferred. Required
  • 3+ years of job experience, preferably in law enforcement or safety driven roles. Required
  • Prior supervisor experience preferred. Preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Demonstrated competency in collaboration, conflict management, accountability, and detail orientation.

AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

  • This position will be expected to work with minimal supervision.
  • The Safety & Security Department requires all its personnel to work varying schedules including
  • evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Personnel assigned to the department are considered
  • essential personnel during and following emergencies.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • This position should expect to work in often uncomfortable indoor and outdoor locations, exposed to
  • extreme weather including extreme heat and wet/humid conditions. This position will be exposed to
  • loud noises and vibration and work alone in low light and dark conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sitting: Remaining in the seated position
  • Stand: Remaining on one’s feet in an upright position at a workstation without moving about
  • Walking: Moving about on foot, climbing stairs, walking on uneven surfaces unassisted
  • Lifting: Raising or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) 25-50 lbs
  • Carrying: Transporting an object
  • A valid driver’s license and clean police record Required
