Job Description

Opportunity at a Glance
We are seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and talented Director – Accounting Policies & Procedures to oversee Adtalem’s research and analysis on technical accounting matters, including assessing significant transactions and the impact of new accounting pronouncements. This role will be heavily involved in advising on transformation efforts, material contracts, and all other technical accounting matters to ensure accounting and reporting implications of transactions are understood by senior management. You will be on the cutting edge of regulatory pronouncements emerging from the FASB and SEC. In addition, the position will be significantly involved in improving the operational effectiveness of the accounting team to support Adtalem’s growth. This position provides high visibility within the Finance organization with an excellent opportunity to work closely with key executives (CFO, CAO, Assistant Controller), expert advisors and auditors. The position will partner with Corporate Development, HR, Legal, FP&A, Treasury, IT and other departments in the achievement of common goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Research and document accounting treatment for new program offerings and complex transactions. Advise management on the implications of accounting and financial reporting impacts of strategic initiatives.  
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure the organization's accounting policies comply with applicable GAAP rules, SEC regulations and internal controls.  
  • Be a change agent and propose recommendations for changes and improvements to accounting policies, procedures and controls to meet business needs. 
  • Communicate critical accounting policy positions to executive management.  
  • Partner with and lead cross-functional teams to develop and implement accounting policies and procedures across the organization.  
  • Serve as a key liaison with external auditors during quarterly reviews and year-end audits, providing support and documentation as needed. 
  • Monitor the development and applicability of emerging accounting and reporting rules being deliberated by the SEC, FASB, PCAOB, and other regulatory bodies.  
  • Assess and implement accounting policies and procedures for current and newly issued GAAP standards, including development of project plans. 
    Ensures compliance with organizational policies, Sarbanes Oxley and internal controls, GAAP standards and statutory requirements.  
  • Contribute to the preparation and review of quarterly and annual reports on Form 10-K, Form 10-Q, and other SEC filings, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.  
  • Directs and controls the teams’ general accounting activities as needed, including recording company transactions, classifications, and reconciliation of account balances in accordance with GAAP and company policy.  
  • Adheres to internal control policies and procedures and maintains high ethical standards of integrity, confidentiality and quality.  
  • Mentor and develop staff members within the team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Empowers staff to identify and implement process improvements.  
  • Provide periodic technical accounting trainings to the members of the Accounting and Finance organizations.  
  • Partner’s with leaders in Corporate Development, HR, Legal, FP&A, Treasury, IT and other departments to achieve financial and operational excellence.  
  • Support the Controllership on other ad hoc projects and requests as determined by management.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA preferred
  • 7-8 minimum years of progressive accounting experience, with at least three years in leadership roles and demonstrated ability to build teams and develop talent, drive team objectives and performance and achieve results in a timely manner required.
  • Technical knowledge in U.S. GAAP, including deals, revenue recognition, leases, credit losses, derivatives, internally developed software, stock-based compensation, among other topics required.
  • Public accounting firm experience required.
  • Strong systems and process improvement experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong US GAAP knowledge / technical skills; strong managerial skills
  • Experience in diagnosing, isolating, and resolving complex issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines and adapting to changing priorities as needed. 
  • Effective negotiation skills, a proactive and 'no surprises' approach in communicating issues and strength in sustaining independent views. Strong relationship management skills are essential. 
  • Facilitate teamwork and cooperation at all levels within the organization and be able to work with limited supervision. 
  • Diligent and well organized

Additional Information

In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected salary range for this position is between $100,171.61 and $175,761.85. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
