Adtalem Global Education (“Adtalem”) is seeking an accomplished, visionary dean to lead Ross University School of Medicine (“RUSM” or “Ross Med”). As the U.S. and countries worldwide continue to grapple with healthcare delivery and the size and composition of the physician workforce, this is a rare opportunity for an academic leader to strengthen and grow an international medical school that significantly contributes to the nation’s physician workforce.
Opportunity at a Glance
The Dean of Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) will be the senior academic leader, providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to ensure educational excellence and student success. Reporting directly to the President of Adtalem Medical and Veterinary (MedVet), the Dean will focus on all aspects of medical education, including curriculum development, faculty excellence, and student outcomes. This position will be based on the Bridgetown, Barbados campus, fostering a strong connection with the academic community, students, and local stakeholders. The Dean will work in close collaboration with the newly established COO, who will oversee the operational and administrative functions of the Barbados campus. The Dean will concentrate on maintaining high standards in academic programs, driving continuous improvement in educational outcomes, and fostering a vibrant learning environment. This role is critical for advancing RUSM's mission of developing skilled physicians and leaders in healthcare.
As a member of the University’s leadership team, the Dean will have the opportunity to shape the future of medical education in Barbados and beyond, influencing the next generation of physicians. The Dean will focus on driving academic excellence and innovation, working alongside the COO to ensure the continued success of a dynamic, forward-thinking institution that values collaboration, academic integrity, and the success of its students.
The Dean will have the opportunity to focus on the following:
Strategic Academic Leadership
- Develop and implement a strategic vision for academic excellence at RUSM, ensuring alignment with Adtalem's broader mission and the goals of the MedVet segment;
- Lead efforts to enhance RUSM’s academic reputation and impact through program innovation, faculty development, and continuous improvement in student success; and
- Ensure high medical education and clinical training standards, aligning RUSM’s curriculum with best practices and evolving accreditation standards.
Curriculum and Program Development
- Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of RUSM’s medical curriculum, ensuring it meets the highest academic standards and prepares students for successful clinical training;
- Collaborate with faculty and academic leadership to integrate new teaching methods, technologies, and assessments that support student learning and outcomes; and
- Lead initiatives to assess and enhance the effectiveness of the curriculum, ensuring alignment with accreditation requirements and the needs of the healthcare sector.
Faculty Leadership and Development
- Recruit, retain, and develop a diverse and high-performing faculty, fostering a culture of scholarship, teaching excellence, and professional growth;
- Oversee faculty evaluation and development processes, supporting initiatives that promote academic innovation and engagement; and
- Champion faculty collaboration and engagement in research, clinical education, and interdisciplinary initiatives that enhance RUSM’s academic environment.
Student Success and Outcomes
- Ensure that RUSM consistently achieves high student outcomes, including performance on board exams, residency placements, and student satisfaction;
- Lead initiatives to support student success, including mentoring programs, academic support services, and professional development opportunities; and
- Collaborate with the COO and student services teams to address student needs, ensuring a seamless experience that supports their academic journey.
Stakeholder Engagement and Community Building
- Serve as RUSM’s academic representative to external stakeholders, including accrediting bodies, government entities, clinical partners, and the broader medical education community;
- Foster strong relationships with faculty, students and staff, building a cohesive and inclusive campus environment that supports academic excellence and student well-being; and
- Engage with the local community and government in Barbados, supporting RUSM’s role as a vital contributor to healthcare education and development in the region.
Collaboration with Adtalem and AUC
- Work closely with the leadership of Adtalem, AUC and the COO to align academic initiatives with operational priorities, ensuring a seamless partnership between academic and operational functions;
- Participate in strategic planning and execution within the MedVet segment, focusing on initiatives that enhance academic quality and student success; and
- Leverage opportunities for collaboration within the Adtalem network to support shared initiatives, such as faculty exchanges and research partnerships.
Candidates will be expected to hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent terminal medical degree with academic credentials qualifying for the rank of full professor and an active medical license recognized in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, or Canada preferred. In addition, strong candidates will be expected to demonstrate most of the following:
- Increasingly responsible leadership experience in medical education, including significant responsibility in an academic administrative role such as associate dean or campus dean;
- Proven track record in curriculum development, accreditation processes, and strategic planning;
- Experience driving academic outcomes, including student performance metrics and faculty development;
- Strong academic leadership skills that inspire and engage faculty, staff, and students;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build partnerships and foster collaboration;
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a track record supporting a diverse student body and faculty; and
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions and drive continuous improvement in academic programs.
