Opportunity at a Glance

The American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine invites applications for full time Faculty - Biochemistry on its Medical Sciences Campus. Medical education is the primary focus of our Medical Sciences Faculty, although research opportunities exist. We seek a faculty member with expertise in biochemistry and experience with students transitioning to medical school.

This position will serve a dual role of supporting delivery of the MedOrigin course, a 10-credit course designed to provide incoming medical students with curated foundational knowledge, practical skills, and strategies necessary for success in medical school prior to the start of their first semester, and Biochemistry instruction in the standard MD Program curriculum, particularly with remediation support as needed.

We are looking for dynamic, adaptive, flexible colleagues who are interested in teaching in a variety of ways, open to utilizing and embracing technology, interacting with students in small group learning formats and creating materials for teaching, which may include videos, digital workbooks, etc.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare course material (handouts, practice questions, etc.)
  • Deliver effective didactic and active learning sessions
  • Facilitate small group learning opportunities targeting remedial content instruction
  • Work one on one with our highly motivated students and guide individual remediation plans for those at-risk of not meeting academic performance requirements
  • Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students for appropriate non-academic support
  • Work closely with our Academy for Teaching and Learning to deliver remediation support aligned with curricular objectives and assessments for improved student learning
  • Write and review NBME-style questions for practice and assessments
  • Prepare and evaluate examinations to assess student accomplishments
  • Develop and improve instructional materials and teaching techniques
  • Participate in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum, particularly with departmental colleagues
  • Actively participate in professional activities to improve teaching & subject matter competence
  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards

Qualifications

  • PhD, MD or equivalent with specialization in Biochemistry Required
  • 1-3 years of relevant teaching experience in a medical school Required
  • Familiarity with USMLE content requirements desirable
  • Interest in medical education
  • Desire for self-improvement
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
  • Preference will be given to an applicant with proven teaching skills within the areas covered by the department
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to reside in Sint Maarten
